NOT CURRENT ADVISORY

Issue Date

8:00 am – Thursday January 31

Valid Until

Midnight – Thursday January 31

Next Update

Saturday February 2

Because of the general nature of this advisory, each party will need to make their own time- and site-specific avalanche hazard evaluations. This advisory best describes conditions at the time of it’s issuance. As time passes avalanche and snow conditions may change, sometimes quite rapidly. Elevation and geographic distinctions used are approximate and transition zones between hazards exist. This advisory does not apply to developed ski areas.

CURRENT DANGER RATING

Moderate

SITUATION

The weather forecast is predicting 1-2 inches today with 2-4  inches more into the evening, with snow levels at 2,500 feet.  Mostly cloudy skies and a bit warmer temperatures are expected today with moderate winds mainly out of the West.  Current temperature is in the mid 20s and winds are calm.

The Pinnacle/Tunnel Ridge area had 56 cm of new and recently modified snow on top of a crust layer. Also noted was a near surface crust in some exposed areas. No propagation in extended column tests (ECTX) were observed. Surface hoar was not found but due to the nature of the exposed, windy area this was not a surprise. Visibility was fair and no new avalanche activity was observed. Blowing snow at ridgetop was apparent as well as recent cornice failures.

DISCUSSION

Mountain snow is predicted through Friday but most, if any, will accumulate through today into tonight.  High pressure is expected to build come Friday.  As always this could change in this dynamic weather world we live in, stay tuned for more up to date info. Watch out for lingering instabilities associated with wind loaded terrain and search out weak interfaces associated with the recent buried surface hoar.

The avalanche hazard will remain at MODERATE today. With recent snow and predicted winds make sure you keep your eyes and ears open and make your own site specific evaluation before dropping in or on any terrain.

See the current NWS (backcountry weather forecast).

TREND

With the the predicted new snow, wind transportation, and buried surface hoar layer avalanche danger could increase.  Check back for updated information as this could change.
